A Damp Morning in Urasoe, Okinawa, and the Calm Before the Typhoon | A Day Spent Watching Over My Mother’s Health

日常の事
天気が悪い沖縄

☁️ This morning, Urasoe is shrouded in a “muggy stillness”

This morning in Urasoe, the **temperature is around 26°C, humidity is 82%, and wind speed is 1 m/s—virtually no wind**.

It seems it rained at dawn; the asphalt is damp, and the trees in the garden look a deep green. The sky is completely overcast, and the humidity is so high that the distant scenery is hazy—it’s a morning filled with that **heavy air characteristic of the days before a typhoon**.

Stepping out onto the balcony, there’s almost no wind, and the air is so muggy it clings to my skin.

It was a quiet start to the day that made me feel, “It’s going to rain today.”

🍵 A Slow Morning and My Mother’s Health

I woke up a little later than usual this morning. I turned on the TV, boiled some water, and then woke my mother. She got up easily today and went to the bathroom.

While she was in there, I brewed some coffee and prepared green tea for her.

For breakfast,

  • – Chopped banana with yogurt and honey
  • – Half a slice of bread

She ate all of it.

She didn’t complain of a headache, and **when I checked the barometric pressure app, it showed that we were right at a “drop in pressure”**.

The next low-pressure trough is expected in the middle of the night tomorrow.

And since there’s a possibility of a typhoon approaching this weekend through early next week, we’re entering a period where we need to keep a close eye on my mother’s health.

🚗 Yesterday’s Events: Car Repairs Completed

Yesterday afternoon, I left my mother with my aunt, went home, and took a short break to do some work on my computer.

After that, I went to “Coback in Urasoe Miyagi” to pick up the car, which had been repaired.

The cause was **a malfunction in the starter motor that was replaced two years ago**.

Since it was still under warranty, the replacement was free.

Feeling a bit guilty, I asked them to do an oil change and replace the oil filter as well, which cost **8,000 yen**.

A standard starter motor replacement usually costs around 80,000 yen, so this really helped.

It looks like I’ll be having my next vehicle inspection done here as well.

🧺 How Mom Was This Morning and Things at Home

Since the humidity is high, Mom took a shower early this morning and seems refreshed.

She says she wants to go to the bank and do some shopping this afternoon, and she’s giving me all sorts of reasons, but I’m just nodding along and letting it go in one ear and out the other.

Mom said she’d fold the laundry I brought back from the laundromat, so I left it to her and relaxed while watching TV.

It seems she’s skipping her “Century-Old Exercise” routine today and is in the mood to take it easy this morning.

🌀 Preparations Before the Typhoon and Plans for the Weekend

This weekend, there’s a **possibility that a typhoon will pass right by or directly hit the main island of Okinawa**.

Some forecasts suggest it will arrive with full force, so I plan to stock up on groceries today.

  • – I’ve already stocked up on vegetables
  • – Since the gas is managed centrally by the apartment complex, it’s unlikely to be shut off
  • – We have a rooftop water tank, so there won’t be an immediate water outage
  • – Power outages are relatively rare in this area (Okinawa Electric Power’s headquarters is nearby)

That said, it’s important to be prepared.

I’m going to go buy the essentials while we still have this “calm period” before the typhoon.

🌈 Summary: The calm before the typhoon and the accumulation of ordinary mornings

This morning in Urasoe felt like a mix of high humidity, cloudy skies, and the calm before the typhoon.

My mother’s condition is relatively stable, and she ate her breakfast well, so I’m relieved.

With the typhoon approaching from the weekend into the start of the week,

**these next few days will be important—we need to take it easy while staying mindful of changes in air pressure and preparing for power outages**.

Today, too, I’ll take it slow and keep building on the little things I can do.
