A Summer Morning in Urasoe, Okinawa | Gentle Breezes and Life After the Rainy Season

朝の風景
朝の空気を吸う

This morning in Urasoe, Okinawa, thin clouds are spreading across the sky, yet strong, summer-like sunlight is streaming through. With temperatures around 28–29°C and humidity at about 80%, the air is thick with the dampness typical of the post-rainy season. At this time of year in Okinawa, nighttime temperatures tend not to drop much, which can easily affect how you feel in the morning. I feel as though the sensation of a gentle breeze flowing through the room helps regulate the rhythm of my daily life. Today, I’ll be documenting this morning in Urasoe, Okinawa, and my daily life.

🌅 The Morning Air and How I’m Feeling Today

When I opened the balcony door and the front door, a gentle breeze flowed through the room. It was a soft, slightly humid breeze that made me think, “This really feels like a summer morning in Okinawa.”

Last night, my mother wasn’t feeling well, so I was up in the middle of the night tending to her. Because of that, I woke up a little later than usual this morning. I boiled some water to make tea, and when I woke my mother up, she got out of bed without any trouble—which was a relief. After she ate about half a piece of bread, I reminded her, “Take your medicine and check your blood pressure,” then took my own medicine and took a breather.

After that, I put the bathroom carpet, bath mat, and other rugs into the washing machine. Laundry dries quickly during sunny spells after the rainy season ends, so days like this make housework go smoothly.

🌀 Signs of a Typhoon and Changes in Her Health

I heard that two typhoons have formed somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Depending on their future paths, there could be significant changes in atmospheric pressure, which might affect my mother’s health. Although she’s saying “I’m sleepy” and “I have a headache” as usual, she seems to be feeling a bit better today. Her appetite is returning, and I’m relieved to see she’s starting to recover from the slump she’s been in these past few days.

Right after the rainy season ends in Okinawa, fluctuations in atmospheric pressure and high humidity persist, making it a difficult time to manage one’s health. Staying well-hydrated and keeping the environment cool are essential.

🛒 A Morning Scene at Kyozuka San-A

I decided to go shopping in the morning and headed straight to Kyozuka San-A. The parking lot wasn’t too crowded, and there was a relaxed, morning atmosphere.

In the grocery section, I looked for items my mother could easily eat while checking for products with discount stickers. We were out of dashi stock, so I restocked that and also bought some instant coffee. I had instant coffee this morning, but the aroma of freshly ground beans is truly special.

After finishing my shopping, I headed to Pizza House Jr., ordered the “Mini Octopus Set” my mother had requested and meat spaghetti for myself, then headed home. My mother had just gotten out of the bath and was watching TV, so I quickly prepared the meal and called her over. I was relieved to see she ate more than I expected. It was a morning where I breathed a sigh of relief, seeing that she seemed to be recovering.

🌞 Afternoon Chores and Signs of Summer

While I was drafting this blog post, the laundry finished, so I hung up the rugs and carpets to dry. Since that was all the laundry I had today, I was able to hang it in the best spot on the balcony—a pleasant start to the afternoon.

With the rainy season over, Urasoe, Okinawa, is moving into full-blown summer. The sun is shining brightly this afternoon, so the laundry should dry well. As the heat intensifies, I’ll need to be careful to look after my health.

✨ Summary

Summer mornings in Urasoe, Okinawa, are gentle times when the humidity and breeze seem to gently adjust the rhythm of daily life. My mother’s health is gradually improving, and today went smoothly with shopping and housework. Now that the rainy season is over, the heat in Okinawa is really setting in, but I want to take it easy and keep a leisurely pace.
