☀️ This Morning’s Sky and the Feel of the Season
This morning in Urasoe, Okinawa, the weather is sunny, with temperatures around 32°C and humidity at 64%, enveloping us in a distinctly summery atmosphere. At this time of year in Okinawa, the strong sunlight and muggy heat can easily affect your physical condition, and your daily rhythm tends to be influenced by the weather. Today, I’ll be documenting this morning’s scene and my daily life.

🌿 Morning Scenery and a Quiet Moment
The sound of cicadas in the distance makes a summer morning in Urasoe feel even more vivid. High, billowing clouds stand out against the blue sky, and a gentle breeze drifts into the house—it’s a peaceful moment. As usual, my morning begins by boiling water and calling out to my elderly mother, “Time to wake up!” Today she was a bit stubborn and wouldn’t get up right away; it took three or four calls before she finally got out of bed. I had bread and coffee, while my mother had some sweet potatoes I baked in the air fryer yesterday and a little soup. Even as she reminisced about sweet potatoes during the war, she managed to eat half of it.
Although her health has improved since a week ago, we still can’t let our guard down. Even if we can get through the morning without the air conditioner, by the afternoon my mother is saying, “It’s hot—turn on the air conditioner.” I’m concerned about the electricity bill, but it’s much better than her getting sick and having to be hospitalized. Here in Okinawa during the summer, I’m reminded once again that air conditioning is a “necessary expense.”

🛒 Outing with Mom and Seasonal Shopping
Yesterday, Mom asked me to “take her to San-A,” so we went out—I also took the opportunity to check my ATM statement. We strolled leisurely through the store as a substitute for a walk, had lunch at Osaka Ohsho, and enjoyed a mini parfait and iced tea at Coffee Tamamu. It seemed like she was able to clear her head for the first time in a while.
Afterward, since she wanted to “send mangoes to a friend,” we headed to Kugani Market. The supply is still low, so prices are on the high side. On the main island of Okinawa, mangoes from Tomigusuku and Nakijin are common, and they should be available at the Nago Farmers’ Market by the end of this month—but with many typhoons expected this year, we’ll have to wait and see how things go.

🌺 Practical Tips for Living in Okinawa During Summer
Since temperatures in Okinawa rise early in the morning and humidity tends to climb quickly during the summer, taking care of your health is very important.
- Finish household chores during the cooler morning hours
- Go out before the sun gets too strong
- Stay hydrated and replenish salt regularly
- Elderly residents should aim to keep indoor temperatures below 28°C when using air conditioning
- Use indoor shopping centers for your errands instead of going for a walk
These tips should also help those living in the same area get through the summer in Urasoe without overexerting themselves.
