🌤 This Morning’s Sky in Minatogawa and the Seasonal Air
This morning in Urasoe, Okinawa, the sky is partly cloudy with patches of sunshine. The temperature is around 29°C, and the humidity is 82%, enveloping us in the moist, September-like air. At this time of year in Okinawa, the weather is prone to change due to typhoons, and our daily rhythms tend to be influenced by the sky. Today, I’ll be documenting this morning in Minatogawa and a glimpse into our daily caregiving life.

👵 Morning Care and Meal Challenges
This morning, I had hoped to wake up at the usual time and have breakfast while watching the morning news… but my mother showed no interest in eating. Even when I served her ochazuke (rice with tea), she took just two bites before returning to bed. My pleas—“Don’t go back to sleep—please eat your breakfast”—fell on deaf ears, and she simply stayed lying down.
Lately,
- she doesn’t wake up in the morning,
- she doesn’t eat,
- she sleeps until nearly noon,
- and she stays up late at night.
This pattern has been continuing, and I’m worried that her daily rhythm is becoming severely disrupted. Considering she’s 89 years old, consecutive days without breakfast can easily lead to a decline in physical strength, so every morning I’m trying different approaches to get her to eat.
Although I’ve been trying various approaches—like offering more fruit and snacks and persistently encouraging her—her eating habits remain highly inconsistent. Even so, by insisting that she finish her meals—even if it means nagging her—I’ve managed to barely keep her weight stable. Since I want to avoid any further weight loss, I’m considering introducing nutritional supplements for the time being.
🍃 Minatogawa in September: The Changing Seasons Carried by the Wind
Now that September has arrived, the mornings and evenings are cooler than I expected, and the breeze feels refreshing. The cherry trees, which had shed their leaves for a while, are now sprouting fresh green leaves again, quietly reminding us of the changing seasons.
Although there’s a typhoon over Okinawa, the winds aren’t too strong this time. When I open the balcony and front door to let the breeze in, it feels wonderful to have the air inside the house gently refreshed. I’d like to spend the morning enjoying the natural breeze as much as possible, but rain is forecast for the afternoon. It looks like it’ll be time to close the windows and switch on the air conditioner.
🧩 For those in the same area and caregiving situation
Okinawa during this season is characterized by:
- High humidity, which can lead to a loss of appetite
- Typhoons that can easily disrupt daily routines
- A significant difference between the cool mornings and the muggy afternoons
These are some of its characteristics. If you have an elderly family member, it can be helpful to use low-burden strategies such as letting morning light into the room, encouraging them to eat small portions several times a day, and utilizing liquid nutritional supplements.

🌈 Summary
The morning in Minatogawa was a peaceful time where I could feel the seasonal breeze and subtle changes. On the other hand, in the world of caregiving, even though each day may seem the same, small changes are actually accumulating. Today, too, I want to cherish each and every one of those changes as I watch over my mother’s health and daily life.
