☀️ This Morning’s Sky and Seasonal Air in Urasoe, Okinawa
This morning in Urasoe, Okinawa, the weather is sunny with occasional clouds. The temperature is around 28°C, and humidity ranges from 78% to 88%, enveloping us in a muggy heat that still feels like a remnant of summer. Last night was also very humid; in fact, the discomfort kept me from sleeping soundly, and I woke up several times around dawn. At this time of year in Okinawa, the muggy heat of the night often lingers into the next morning, and our daily rhythms tend to be influenced by the weather. Today, I’ll document what this morning was like and a typical day in my life as a caregiver.
🌿 A Moment from This Morning’s Caregiving
I woke up a little early and let my mother rest until her usual wake-up time before calling out to her. After saying, “Time to wake up,” a few times, she slowly opened her eyes. I prepared some tea and said, “Have some tea,” and she began sipping it little by little. After that, it was time for breakfast.
Today’s breakfast was a small portion of rice with rolled omelet and sausage. Although the portion was modest, she ate heartily and seemed more energetic than usual this morning.
👵 Preparations for the Senior Citizens’ Celebration and the Usual “Detour Style”
Today is the day of the Senior Citizens’ Festival luncheon on the first floor of our apartment building. Mom started preparing first thing in the morning, but her usual “preparing while taking detours” routine continued—she’d open a drawer, then sit down to do something else, or say she was going to take a shower only to open yet another drawer.
When I told her, “Go take a shower,” she’d reply, “I’m going now,” but then start doing something else… After repeating this exchange several times, she finally headed for the shower.
🍱 The “100-Year-Old Exercise” and Lunch Gathering Schedule
The Senior Citizens’ Day event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Before that, there’s the “100-Year-Old Exercise,” and after the exercises, everyone will gather around their boxed lunches for a leisurely chat. It’s a different kind of day than usual, but I hope it serves as a nice change of pace. If Mom has a good time, that alone will make me happy.
🌺 Tips for Living in This Season
In September, Okinawa still experiences the humidity and heat of midsummer. During my morning care routine, the following are especially important:
Ensuring good ventilation indoors
Encouraging her to drink fluids frequently
Serving a light yet nutritious breakfast
Checking the heatstroke index before going out. On days with high humidity, physical stamina is easily drained, so maintaining a comfortable pace helps ensure her peace of mind.
🌼 Summary
It’s still a muggy morning here in Urasoe, Okinawa, but seeing my mother head off to the Senior Citizens’ Celebration in good spirits marked the start of another peaceful day. The changing of the seasons can be a time when our health is more prone to fluctuations, so I hope to take things slowly and avoid overexertion.
