Shopping in the afternoon
The rain that had been pouring steadily until midday transformed into clear skies by afternoon, as if entering a different world. Checking the weather forecast, I found it had changed to “sunny” without me noticing, leaving only strong winds behind. Recalling the crowded scene at the coin laundry that morning, the sudden shift felt so drastic I wondered, “Was that really the same world?” The sky’s color and humidity showed a completely different face from the morning, an unsettled sky typical of the changing seasons.
🚗 A Drive with Mom to AEON Naha
After finishing my morning tasks and returning home, Mom was already up and greeted me with an energetic, “Let’s go shopping!”
That single sentence decided our afternoon plans, and we headed by car to AEON in Naha.
We parked on the usual 6th floor. Though it’s normally a crowded area, there were surprisingly few cars that day, and we parked right in front of the elevator. Perhaps influenced by the clearing skies, the air felt light, making the drive itself quite pleasant.
🍣 Lunch at Kura Sushi
We took the elevator to the second floor for lunch at Kura Sushi.
Mom seemed satisfied with chawanmushi and about three plates of sushi, savoring each bite slowly. I ate heartily and finished with kitsune udon. The calm, weekday atmosphere inside let us eat leisurely, and Mom’s expression was peaceful.
🛒 Shopping for Daily Supplies
After lunch, we moved to the first floor to shop for daily supplies.
When I checked what my mother needed, she said she wanted these three items:
– Toilet paper
– Boxed tissues
– Incontinence pads
As I placed them in the cart, I asked, “Do you need any groceries?” She seemed to have no particular need today. After checking out, we took a slightly longer route home. In the car, Mom gazed at the scenery outside and happily remarked, “It’s so nice that it’s sunny.”

AEON Naha is directly connected to the 2nd floor of the Oroku Monorail Station, making it a popular spot for tourists to do their last-minute shopping. Even on weekdays, it’s crowded, especially the first floor where household goods and souvenir shops are adjacent, creating a lively atmosphere.
The liquor shop stocks a wide selection of awamori, whiskey, craft beer, and more. The food court features diverse options like Blue Seal, Nagasaki Champon, Pizza House Jr., Lotteria, Kame Soba, Gindaco, and Sukiya. For coffee, choices include Mister Donut, Doutor, and Starbucks, making it convenient for both tourists and locals. Many international visitors are also seen shopping while pulling suitcases.
🏡 A Rest After Returning Home
Upon getting home, Mom carefully folded the laundry she’d brought back from the laundromat, then headed straight to bed to nap while watching TV. I must have been tired from the past few days too, because I fell asleep the moment I lay down. The quiet afternoon seemed to seep slowly into my body.

After waking from a short nap, I settled into the task of organizing the afternoon’s events. Outside, clouds began spreading again, hinting at rain as the forecast predicted. Watching the changeable sky outside the window, I recalled today’s events one by one and put them into words. The quiet inside the house felt pleasant, allowing me to write with concentration.

The weather forecast says rain will fall temporarily later, then turn cloudy again. Tomorrow is also expected to be windy with high waves, promising a whirlwind of weather: sunny in the morning, then rain starting in the afternoon. Despite being surprised by the sudden weather change in the afternoon, I had a peaceful and fulfilling time shopping with my mother, having lunch at Kura Sushi, and shopping at AEON Naha. After returning home, a quiet nap and some writing time felt like they helped center my mind amidst the hectic day. Even amidst this changeable weather, these simple moments bring warmth to daily life.
