It’s sunny this morning in Urasoe, Okinawa. The temperature is around 30°C, but the intense sunlight makes it feel like 35°C. With humidity at 77%, there’s a muggy, midsummer-like heat, and it’s a calm morning with a southerly breeze blowing at about 5 m/s. Summer light was already streaming into the streets of Minatogawa, and the white walls of the “foreigners’ houses” were shining brightly. At this time of year in Okinawa, with high temperatures and humidity starting early in the morning, daily routines tend to be dictated by the weather. Today, I’ll be documenting the morning scenery in Minatogawa and life in Urasoe.

☀️ Morning Scenery in Minatogawa and the Atmosphere of the “Foreigners’ Houses”

This morning in Minatogawa, the air already had a summery feel to it. The wind was light, with a gentle breeze flowing slowly, and it was hot enough to make you break a sweat just by stepping outside. Elementary school students walking through the Foreigners’ Housing complex after passing through the apartment complex grounds were creating another lively morning scene today. As the morning sun streamed through the row of white Foreigners’ Housing buildings, it was a moment where the quietness and brightness characteristic of Minatogawa blended together.

🌿 A Leisurely Morning and Life with My Mother

I woke up a little later than usual this morning. A little while after I got up, my mother woke up too. “It’s hot already this early in the morning,” she said as she opened the balcony door and the front door to let in some fresh air. While preparing breakfast, I unloaded last night’s dishes from the dishwasher and filled the kettle with water to boil. By the time the water boiled, the aroma of bread warmed in the air fryer filled the air, and it was time to slowly start brewing coffee. I made tea for my mother and poured another cup for my father at the family altar. This morning routine has become the rhythm of our daily life here in Urasoe.

🌞 Midsummer Weather and a Moment of Housework

Since I did a huge load of laundry yesterday, today I just had to hang out my mother’s lightweight blanket. Midsummer in Urasoe brings strong sunlight that’s perfect for drying futons and blankets—it’s so bright that just looking outside is dazzling. My mother goes to day care in the afternoon. She spends the morning relaxing while watching TV, and as she mentions, “The All-Star Game is on in the U.S.,” it’s clear she remembers the players’ details quite well. Her stamina is gradually returning, so I hope she can take it easy again today.

🍳 My Afternoon Alone and Making Staple Side Dishes

The afternoon is my time alone. While making dinner, I plan to prepare a few staple side dishes to keep in the fridge. My mom often says, “I can’t eat much, but I want to try a variety of things,” so I’m trying to gradually increase the variety of dishes I make. Since summer in Okinawa is a season when appetites tend to wane, it’s reassuring to have side dishes ready that provide nutrition in small portions.

🌺 Seasonal Living Tips

In the height of summer in Okinawa, temperatures and humidity are high from the morning onward, so timing is key when ventilating your home. Simply opening the windows in the morning to let the breeze in and using curtains to block the sunlight during the day can help keep indoor temperatures from rising too much. Also, using a parasol or hat when going out and making a point to stay hydrated frequently helps prevent heatstroke. In residential areas like Minatogawa, getting household chores done in the morning allows you to spend the afternoon without being overwhelmed by the heat.

🌈 Summary

This morning in Urasoe and Minatogawa, the strong sunlight was typical of midsummer. The quiet scenery of the foreigner housing district evokes the changing seasons, and the dazzling light illuminates the start of the day. The heat will continue, so let’s take it easy and enjoy the day at a leisurely pace.
