Refreshing Cloudy Morning in Okinawa, Urasoe | Rainy Season Weather and Daily Life

This morning in Urasoe, Okinawa, the sky is cloudy, with a temperature of around 23°C and humidity at 80%. The air feels relatively dry for the rainy season. A slightly strong easterly wind is blowing at 6 m/s, making for a pleasant morning with a cool breeze. In Okinawa during the rainy season, changes in atmospheric pressure can easily make you feel under the weather, and daily routines tend to be influenced by the weather. Today, I’ll be documenting this morning’s atmosphere and our relaxed weekend life.

☁️ A leisurely start to the weekend morning

Since it’s the weekend, I woke up a little later than usual this morning. As I turned on the TV and glanced at the news, a Major League Baseball game was just airing. I was about to wake my mother up when, perfectly timed, she returned from the bathroom. I had her sit down in a chair, and we spent the morning together watching TV.

For breakfast today, we had sata andagi and coffee—something we haven’t had in a while. The sata andagi I bought at the bakery stays soft inside even after a few days, and warming it up in the air fryer brings back its fluffy texture. My mother enjoyed it too, making for a peaceful weekend morning.

🌧️ The Rainy Season and Fluctuating Health

The rainy season is coming to an end in Okinawa, with forecasts predicting it will end around next week. During the rainy season, the weather is prone to sudden changes, and my mother often complains of headaches and feeling unwell due to the low-pressure systems.

She tries to sit in a chair and clean, but her body doesn’t move as she wants it to, and there are many days when she ends up lying in bed waiting for her headache to subside. She also suffers from recurring bouts of diarrhea and constipation, which tend to reduce her opportunities to go out.

I can only hope that once the rainy season ends, her health will stabilize, even if just a little.

🛶 The Season of the Hari Is Upon Us

Starting around next week, Hari festivals will begin at fishing ports throughout Okinawa. In Okinawa, it is said that “when the Hari bell rings, the rainy season ends,” making it an event that marks the changing of the seasons.

When I used to live in Nago City, I once took my parents to see the Hari at Nago Fishing Port. Four long boats race against each other, and the event gets really lively with various teams participating—colleagues from work, neighborhood associations, and groups of friends.

There are many people watching the race while drinking beer at the food stalls, taking photos, and tourists as well; it’s a vibrant event that symbolizes early summer in Okinawa. It’s a great way to experience Okinawa beyond just swimming, and participating would be a wonderful experience.

🛒 Yesterday’s Shopping and Today’s Plans

Yesterday, my mom said she wanted to go shopping, so we headed to Matsumoto Kiyoshi, but she started feeling sick on the way, and we ended up going home without buying the tea and water we’d planned.

Since it’s the weekend today and it’s likely to be crowded, I’m thinking of going shopping at a different time of day.

I don’t have any major plans, but I feel like I might have some time to relax. I don’t know how it will actually turn out, but I hope today turns out to be a fulfilling day.
