✂️ Memories of home haircuts and precious time with my father

Okinawa was warm again today, and I gave myself a haircut this afternoon.
Whenever I pick up the clippers, memories of cutting my father’s hair inevitably come flooding back.

Why I Started Home Haircuts

I usually cut my own hair, but around the time before COVID, I started taking my father to a very cheap barber shop.
However, it gradually became difficult for him to sit still in the chair, and I felt it would be better to do it at home.

So, I bought a clipper set for about 2,000 yen on Amazon and decided to give him haircuts at home.

Haircut Time with Dad

Since I’m an amateur, the result is “more or less like this,” but I carefully trimmed it by switching attachments.

Dad complains, “Don’t cut the top too short,” but on hot days, I do go a bit shorter.
Later, I heard he was happy because the ladies at daycare complimented him, saying he looked “cool.”

After the haircut, he always smiles and happily says, “Top-notch, nice job.”

Continuing Home Haircuts Through the Pandemic

We started cutting his hair just as the COVID lockdown began, so for a while it was just back and forth between home and daycare.
Even after COVID ended, we kept up the home haircuts. For the 4-5 years until my father passed away, I cut his hair about once every three months.

Every time I cut my own hair, I remember those days of arguing back and forth with my father while sliding the clippers through his hair.

What I Remember Now

I can no longer cut my father’s hair, but holding the clippers naturally brings back those memories.

“I can no longer cut my father’s hair, but the memories come flooding back.”

It will soon be a year.
The sadness has gradually faded, replaced by more and more warm memories.
It’s an unforgettable, precious time.

Benefits of Home Haircuts

I imagine many caregivers also give haircuts at home.
Indeed, home haircuts offer these advantages:

● Avoids infection risk

This was especially reassuring during the pandemic.

● Cost-effective

With rising prices making even 1000-yen haircuts difficult, clippers cost around 2000 yen.
If you’re not particular, they give perfectly clean results.

● Reduces Caregiving Burden

Eliminates the hassle of transportation, and the person being cared for can relax during the haircut.

● Modern Clippers Are Excellent

They come with a variety of attachments, and if you cut carefully while watching closely, you can achieve a reasonably neat trim.

Summary

Cutting my father’s hair wasn’t just about grooming; it was precious time shared between father and son.
Even now, every few months when I cut my own hair, I recall the conversations and smiles from those days.
