Calm Cloudy Afternoon in Urasoe, Okinawa | Rainy Season Life and Daily Moments

The sky over Urasoe, Okinawa, is overcast again today, and the air is heavy with the humidity typical of the rainy season. The changing seasons can make it easy to feel under the weather, and our daily rhythms tend to be influenced by the weather. On this cloudy afternoon, I’ll record the everyday moments I spent taking my time.

🍱 Lunch that doubled as a fridge clean-out

For lunch, I reheated the small portions of leftovers that had been lingering in the fridge and cleared them out. My mom always leaves a little bit behind, so when I add my own leftovers, the number of small plates piles up, and before I know it, the fridge is stacked with “plates with just a little left.” Today, I gathered those leftovers to make lunch while also tidying up.

After lunch, I worked on my computer while drinking coffee. My mom is still suffering from a headache; it seems she’s being affected by the low-pressure system under the overcast sky.

🧺 A Small Discovery at the Laundromat

Last time I went to Marusan Laundromat, I mentioned that I was struggling with having so many black hangers, and the clerk told me, “Bring them in—we’ll take them off your hands.” They’d been piling up for years, and I’d been at a loss about what to do with them, so today I decided to take the plunge and bring them in. The clerk accepted them with a smile, saying, “Thank you so much!”

It was a pleasant surprise to discover such a convenient local service.

🛒 Shopping and the Long Line at Mister Donut

In the meantime, I went shopping. I paid for two cases of water and two cases of tea first, then loaded them into the car. The clerk who always greets me was at the self-checkout, so I said a quick hello before heading back inside.

I headed toward the entrance to use the restroom, only to find a long line. Wondering what was going on, I realized it was the line for a limited-time offer at Mister Donut. I’d been seeing people line up there for a while now, and it seems it’s still going on. I’m not really interested in limited-edition items, so I slipped past the line and headed to the grocery section.

Pushing my cart, I looked for bargains while picturing what was in my fridge. Nothing stood out in particular, so I bought eggs, beer for my evening drink, and some snacks. When I stepped outside, it was pouring rain only around the supermarket. I drove past one traffic light, and the rain had stopped—the fact that the weather varies so much from one area to another is typical of Okinawa.

🍛 Preparing Dinner and Memories of My Father

After getting home and resting a bit, it was already evening. Feeling as though time had flown by, I started preparing dinner. Today’s menu: curry.

I added new potatoes, carrots, bell peppers, and a mixed mushroom pack (king oyster, enoki, and shimeji) and started simmering it. Thinking of my mother’s health, I added a generous amount of ginger.

In our household, we eat dinner early and have a habit of finishing by 7:00 p.m. This stems from when my father was still healthy: the hospital instructed us to help him bathe at 5:00 p.m., have dinner immediately afterward, and give him his medication by 7:00 p.m. That rhythm is still deeply ingrained in me.

My father loved curry, so I decided to make it at least once every two weeks. It was partly to help me remember the date, but it was also an important tradition that he looked forward to.

🕒 The day flies by in the blink of an eye

I make breakfast, draft a blog post, prepare lunch, go shopping, write another blog post in the afternoon, cook dinner, remind him to take his medicine after dinner, and clean up—and finally, the day is over.

Today I didn’t have laundry to do, but on some days I manage to get that done in the morning as well.

Before I know it, my personal time is steadily being whittled away, but I tell myself it can’t be helped and just keep juggling my time day by day.

✨ Summary

A busy yet peaceful afternoon spent under cloudy skies in Urasoe, Okinawa. During the rainy season, it’s easy to feel under the weather, and the rhythm of housework and caregiving is often dictated by the weather, but the small daily discoveries and routines are what sustain my life. Thank you for your hard work today.
