This morning in Urasoe, Okinawa, the day began with a damp, overcast sky, but by the afternoon, the sun peeked through the clouds at times, making for the kind of changeable weather typical of the rainy season. Temperatures rose to around 28°C, and with humidity as high as 80–90%, it was a muggy afternoon when walking outside. During the rainy season in Okinawa, short showers alternate with sunny spells, and daily life tends to be dictated by the weather. Today, I’ll share a record of my afternoon shopping trip spent amidst this seasonal atmosphere.
🛒 Heading to Nishihara San-A in the Afternoon
I headed out to Nishihara San-A for some shopping in the afternoon.
When I entered the food court, it wasn’t completely full, but there were quite a few people—mostly seniors—and it had a calm, bustling atmosphere typical of a weekday. I found a chair for my mother to sit in and asked, “What would you like to eat?” She replied, “Anything is fine.” From there, I suggested a few options—“Okinawa soba?” “Hamburger steak?”—and we finally settled on the hamburger steak set meal (with soup and rice).
I chose the cheese hamburger steak set meal and headed to the touchscreen ordering kiosk.

👵👴 Helping an Elderly Person Struggling with the Touchscreen
At the newly installed touchscreen ordering kiosk, an elderly couple in line ahead of us was having trouble operating it. They seemed flustered as error messages kept popping up, so I asked, “Are you having trouble?” and offered to help them place their order.
While confirming their order details,
- Mom: Hamburger Steak Set Meal (small rice, soup included)
- Father: Hamburger Steak Set Meal (regular-sized rice, with soup)
I entered these details on the touchscreen and successfully completed the order.
Next, they said they didn’t know how to enter their San-A Card points, so I took their card, scanned it, and guided them through the process until they paid in cash.
“Thank you—we can finally have lunch,” they said with a smile, and it was a heartwarming moment for me as well.
*Since Nishihara San-A tends to have many elderly customers on weekdays, it might be a good idea to simplify the touchscreen operation a bit more. I felt that having a staff member stationed there to provide guidance would make it an even more reassuring experience for customers.

🍩 A Break at Starbucks After Lunch
After lunch, we walked around the store, picking up some groceries in the food section, and headed to Mister Donut to get some coffee after checking out.
However, there was a long line due to a limited-time promotion, so we decided not to go in.
Instead, we went to a nearby Starbucks, where I ordered a tall coffee and my mother ordered a hot chai.
We had planned to order a donut and split it, but my mother ate only a quarter of it and said, “It’s too sweet—I’m done,” so I finished the rest.

🌤 The sun peeking out on the way home—a rare sight
As we drove away from Nishihara San-A, it had been raining on and off for part of the way, but on the way back, the clouds parted and sunlight broke through for the first time in a while.
Those fleeting moments of sunshine between the rainy season showers feel especially special in Okinawa.
The bright light made me think, “Maybe the rainy season is almost over,” and it was an afternoon where I could really feel the changing of the seasons.
